Roster Cleanup – 2021

Roster Cleanup – 2021

The following feature was written by Nagasaki.

In the previous article we explored the various considerations to be used to aid toward a healthier budget in preparation for 2021.  Today we will break down each team to assess the moves each owner might consider.

Bangkok Blitz

None

Christmas Island Crabs

Ian Thomas, TE/CAR: If he can’t be moved, cutting him would cost $1.70 to not play for the crabs as opposed to $3.30 to play poorly for CIC.

Ecuador Ewoks

None

Egypt Pharaohs

Marvin Jones, WR/JAX: at $7.40/$7.30 the next two seasons, the worth chart would indicate WR23 or better finishes for the new Jaguar.   With Chark and Shenault, … and Etienne catching passes as well, it will be difficult to produce WR23 or better numbers even if Jacksonville ends up a powerful offense.   $7.40 cap hit one year or $3.70 each the next two years would return the same amount of cash back in relief.

Dan Bailey, K/FA: currently without a team, but could be signed by another.  May consider releasing before the deadline to free up the roster spot and recapture 50c in cash.

Dawson Knox, TE/BUF: at TE9 salary the $2.60/$2.60 salary may be worth ditching to recoup $1.30 per year.   After top 10 TEs, the cost is presumably $1 each.

Jamaica Jerks

Jordan Howard, RB/PHI: at $3.60 Howard seems overpriced.   Having a minimum wage value, he could be released to save $1.80 and be replaced by another backup for $1 or reclaimed in auction for $1, saving $0.80

James Washington, WR/PIT: in his final year of rookie contract, $3.60 comes in overpriced.   Washington makes an excellent backup for injuries in Pittsburgh.   He can be had for league minimum in the auction.  Releasing him would have no penalty, freeing up the full $3.60 in cash.

Nagasaki Kamikazes

Davante Adams, WR/GB or DeAndre Hopkins, WR/ARI:  Collectively costing over 40% of the budget, perhaps worth $40M in PPG but having WR depth the Kamikazes can use RB help and any owner with more than one RB1 might be interested in a WR1 trade package.   If not, letting Hopkins go in the NFT auction would net a pick or two and recapture $20M.

Russia Renegades

Hunter Henry, TE/NE or OJ Howard, TE/TB: would be the only players considered overpriced on the Renegade roster.  At $3.90 each those are top 7ish numbers.   Both typically ranked in the TE2 or TE3 range, some cash could be freed up and 2 roster spots open for a different backup TE behind Gesicki and perhaps Pittman when ready to come up.

San Juan Scorpions

Zach Ertz, TE/PHI: at $5.60/$5.60 over the next 2 seasons, Ertz is ranked between 13 and 26 on most ECR boards and averaging in around TE21.   There are 3 TEs ranked higher who are available in auction, or, Ertz could be had for cheaper if let go and bid on in auction.   $5.60 one time hit or $2.80 each year the next 2 would be the cap penalty.

Switzerland Squirrels

Gardner Minshew, QB/JAX: at league minimum for 2 more years, the Squirrels could cut Minshew and save $1 by paying 50c cap hit this year and next or pay the full $1 this year.   At 16 spots filled, and 2 QBs on roster, Minshew’s release seems imminent.

Jaylen Samuels, RB/PIT: a rookie boomerang candidate, freeing up $2.60 in cash with no penalty for releasing, could be had for $1 in auction.

Hakeem Butler, TE/PHI: same as Samuels, could be released without penalty.  However, at league minimum, he may be worth holding to see what develops.  Listed as a TE now in Philly, he could be used as WR as he entered the league as, and Philly lacks depth at WR.

Turkey Jerky

DeAndre Washington, RB/FA: without a team as of now, $2.60 against the cap can be a $1.30 cap hit and free up $1.30 for another backup RB.

Danny Amendola, WR/FA: not yet announcing retirement, but teamless and set to be 36 years old this season, the roster spot can be freed up with 50c cap hit this year and next, or, $1 this year and be clear.

Ukraine Grainers

Matthew Stafford, QB/LAR: borderline value.  Using CPBA, Stafford’s salary might be worth the up-side potential considering the salaries of Wentz, Hurts, and Watson.  However, at 18 players and a couple corral players ready for call up, carrying 4 QBs might not be best.

Ito Smith, RB/FA: without a team as of now, can free up a roster spot for a corral player at the cost of $0.50 cap hit.

Wake Island Wookiees

Daniel Jones, QB/NYG: should be considered for a rookie boomerang.   If considering keeping Jones, you can cut his $2.90/$3.90 2-year contract without any penalty and should be able to acquire Jones in auction for less.

James Robinson, RB/JAX: at $18M seems high but a few things to consider.  Etienne is an excellent pass catcher and both might be on the field at the same time, with Travis out wide.   With RB scarcity it might be risky to throw back Robinson to try and bid on him in auction, in hopes to get him cheaper.   Using Peter/Paul, consider this:  Barkley can finish top 5.   Using the Worth Chart, RB5 or better have worth between $25.90 and $42.80 so having a salary of $13.20, if Barkley finishes RB5, you get $12.70 excess value for his cost.   The expectation for Robinson then would be $5.30 (his $18M contract less the $12.70 Barkley value) and anything better than RB27 fominish for Robinson would be a value.

Darrell Henderson, RB/LAR: cutting him under rookie contract would have no penalty and recapture $6.90 in cash to spend this year and $9.30 next year.   $16.20 in cash over the next 2 season, Henderson should have a cost of league minimum if you choose to bid for his services this year.

Todd Gurley, RB/FA: still looking for an NFL team, he’s on the Wookiee books for $14.90 this year.   Cutting him will incur $7.50 in cap penalty though returning $7.40 in extra cash for this year’s auction.  That amount should get you an RB23 or better in worth.  Or, use that cash toward the WR need and grab Gurley back or any other backup RB for $1.00

John Ross, WR/NYG or Auden Tate, WR/CIN: after the moves the Giants and Bengals made in the off-season, both players move even further down their depth charts.   Cutting both would cost $1.00 in cap hit but recover $1.00 in cash.  While this seems minimal, there are plenty of better $1.00 players available in auction.  This frees up 2 roster spots that can be replaced with a dollar a piece players, costing you only $3.00 in the end to cover two spots, with better talent, than to stick with the $2.00 with Tate and Ross.  If you don’t release them, you will likely release them mid-season and spend $2 to fill both spots, atop the $2 you spent to keep Ross/Tate ($4 total instead of $3).
