Tuesday Evening Kicker: 2020 Week 1 Recap

In Week 1 of action, the MFFL saw two teams seek and achieve revenge from last year’s playoffs, two division favorites pull out convincing victories, a return to offensive prowess for the Wookiees, and a strong non-conference victory for Jamaica.

Crab cakes and football … that’s what Ukraine does

Ukraine Grainers 186.23, Christmas Island Crabs 162.18 — The Ukraine Grainers exacted a measure of revenge on the Christmas Island Crabs in a rematch of the 2019 Super Bowl. All Grainers players scored double figures in this one. Running back Christian McCaffrey picked up where he left off last year, scoring 33 points — matching his 2019 season average. Quarterback Deshaun Watson tallied 25.33 points and wide receiver Will Fuller finished with 24.2. For the Crabs, quarterback Russell Wilson lit up the scoreboard with 33.98 points. He was followed by running back David Johnson with 22.1 and receiver Tyler Lockett with 21.2. Next Week: Ukraine will head to Russia for a North Division battle with the Renegades. Christmas Island takes on East Division rival Nagasaki in a rematch of the 2019 Southeast Conference title game.

Kamikazes fly past Renegades late

Nagasaki Kamikazes 205.43, Russia Renegades 189.52 — In a rematch of the 2019 third-place game, Nagasaki defeated Russia behind a huge fourth quarter. Receiver Davante Adams led the way with 49.85 points, followed by 32.1 from Ezekiel Elliott and 23.38 from Ben Roethlisberger. Aaron Jones, Travis Kelce, and the Steelers defense all tallied north of 20 points. For the Renegades, Josh Jacobs (40.9) and Calvin Ridley (41.6) each topped 40 points to lead the Renegades in scoring. Quarterback Lamar Jackson tallied 29.07 points and Allen Robinson finished with 16.75. Next Week: Nagasaki will take on East Division rival Christmas Island. Russia defends its home turf against North Division rival Ukraine.

Scorpions flatten the Jerky

San Juan Scorpions 176.5, Turkey Jerky 130.17 — The San Juan Scorpions notched an early home victory by defeating the Turkey Jerky, 176.5-130.17. Quarterback Josh Allen led all scorers with 33.15 points. Running back Alvin Kamara racked up 26.1 points, D.K. Metcalf tallied 23.5 points, Robert Woods added 22.1 points and Stefon Diggs finished with 21.85. Receiver Amari Cooper led the Jerky with 23.6 points. Running back Derrick Henry picked up 22.3 points and quarterback Jared Goff finished with 15.47. Next Week: San Juan travels to Jamaica to take on the West rival and division winner Jerks. Turkey will try to rebound when they defend their home turf against South rival and division winner Egypt.

Blitz bring the heat against the Ewoks

Bangkok Blitz 174.92, Ecuador Ewoks 123.7 — The other side of rebuilding tastes so sweet, as the Blitz accomplished in one week what it took them 10 weeks to do in 2019: win their first game. First-overall draft pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored 24.8 points in the first quarter and the Blitz cruised from there. Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster led the way with 28.9 points while Noah Fant added 22.6 points and Dak Prescott finished with 21.72. Running back Raheem Mostert led the Ewoks in the loss with 28.1 points. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill added 23.55 points and Jimmy Graham notched 14.25. Next Week: Bangkok will try to get a different kind of streak going this year when they face Switzerland. The Ewoks will try to rebound when they host the Wookiees.

Wookiees wallop the Squirrels

Wake Island Wookiees 182.7, Switzerland Squirrels 136.77 — The Wookiees piled on the offense in a 182.7-136.77 victory over Switzerland. New receiver DeAndre Hopkins tallied 37.1 points to lead the team in scoring. Fellow receiver Julio Jones added 30.7 and quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 29.35. Receiver Adam Thielen notched 35.5 points for the Squirrels in the loss. Tight end Mark Andrews finished with 26.8 points and Gardner Minshew added 22.42. Next Week: Wake Island will look to keep things going when they face Ecuador. Switzerland will try to win its first game when they take on Bangkok.

Jerks bully the Pharaohs into submission

Jamaica Jerks 147.72, Egypt Pharaohs 121.08 — Jamaica picked up a big first-week victory by taking down the Pharaohs. Quarterback Cam Newton had a huge first outing with 31.42 points. Running backs Chris Carson (25.8) and Dalvin Cook (24.2) helped pace the Jerks as well. For the Pharaohs, receiver Jamison Crowder tallied 29.75 points to lead the team in the loss. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes added 22.03 points and running back Ronald Jones finished with 13.6. Next Week: Jamaica will try to make it two in a row when they defend their home turf against West Division rival San Juan. Egypt will try to defend its own crown against South Division foe Turkey.
