2020 MFFL Auction Grades

Michael Thomas became the highest-paid player in the MFFL by inking a $23 million deal with Nagasaki.

(analysis from post-auction results, before any other moves were made)

Grades and analysis are largely based upon statistical projections with a touch of subjective reasoning sprinkled throughout.

Criteria for grading includes:

  • Projected points per player signed.
  • Projected points per dollar spent.
  • Number of projected starters signed.
  • Percentage of empty spots filled by projected starters.
  • Projected points per projected starter.
  • Projected points per dollar spent on projected starters.

*PPD = points per dollar

Jamaica Jerks — A

Perhaps no team did more with less than the Jamaica Jerks. The Jerks needed to fill six spots entering the auction and had just $19 million to do it, plus had to budget for retaining running back Chris Carson. Jamaica signed a projected four starters via the auction and graded very highly in points per signing and points per starter. Most impressive is they still walked away with $13.25 million in cash.
Best Value: Cam Newton, QB/NE ($0.50 / 709.36 PPD)
Most Questionable: Rob Gronkowski, TE/TB ($3.25 / 50.75 PPD)

Switzerland Squirrels — A

Switzerland had three top free agents they aimed to retain and had a tight budget to do it. Fortunately for them, they secured the trio of James Conner, Adam Thielen and Cooper Kupp and had money to spare, too. The Squirrels graded well in starters signed, points per starter, and points per dollar spent on starters.
Best Value: Tyrod Taylor, QB/LAC ($0.25 / 1212.48 PPD)
Most Questionable: Tyler Higbee, TE/LAR ($4.25 / 37.96 PPD)

Egypt Pharaohs — A-

The Pharaohs entered the 2020 Auction with both a lot of money to spend and a lot of spots to fill. The reigning South Division champions added significantly to their arsenal, landing seven projected starters, second-most among all teams. The Pharaohs were among the top teams in points per signing and did well with points per dollar spent, too.
Best Value: Eric Ebron, TE/PIT ($0.25 / 610.00 PPD)
Most Questionable: Preston Williams, WR/MIA ($4.50 / 28.89 PPD)

Ecuador Ewoks — A-

In a bit of a bind financially due to the exorbitant cap hit for David Johnson, the Ewoks made several good signings to put themselves in position to compete in 2020. Ecuador signed eight projected starters, the most among all MFFL teams. They also graded well in percentage of spots filled by a starter and points per dollar spent on projected starters.
Best Value: Jimmy Graham, TE/CHI ($0.25 / 517.16 PPD)
Most Questionable: Keenan Allen, WR/LAC ($9.75 / 24.58 PPD)

Ukraine Grainers — B+

The Grainers were one of the most complete teams entering the auction and left it even stronger. The Grainers signed six players via the auction, including four projected starters, giving them a high grade in starters signed and percentage of spots filled by starters. They also graded highly in points per signing and points per starter.
Best Value: San Francisco 49ers, DST/SF ($0.50 / 389.56 PPD)
Most Questionable: A.J. Green, WR/CIN ($4.00 / 53.48 PPD)

Turkey Jerky — B

Turkey entered the auction diving head first into the bargain bin at the dollar store. Their 13 spots to fill were among the most in the league and yet they had barely pennies to do it. Still, the Jerky walked away with several good values. They were the highest graded team in points per dollar spent on projected starters. They also scored well in points per dollar spent overall and number of projected starters signed.
Best Value: Tyler Eifert, TE/JAX ($0.25 / 702.60 PPD)
Most Questionable: DeAndre Washington, RB/KC ($2.00 / 47.20 PPD)

Wake Island Wookiees — B

Wake Island, with the NFT portion included, had just four spots to fill, the fewest among any team in the MFFL. They also had the least cash available to do it. But the Wookiees finished first in percentage of spots filled by projected starters, landing three projected starters. They fared well in points per dollar spent on projected starters, too.
Best Value: Greg Olsen, TE/SEA ($0.25 / 625.48 PPD)
Most Questionable: Blake Jarwin, TE/DAL ($3.25 / 44.74 PPD)

Nagasaki Kamikazes — B-

The Kamikazes possessed one of the strongest starting lineups in the MFFL, but needed to leave the auction by strengthening their reserves with among the smallest cash totals in the league. With NFT portion included, the Kamikazes scored highly in points per signing, points per projected starter, and number of projected starters signed.
Best Value: Ben Roethlisberger, QB/PIT ($1.00 / 308.92 PPD)
Most Questionable: Michael Thomas, WR/NO ($23.00 / 14.17 PPD)

Russia Renegades — B-

Russia had a solid foundation prior to the auction and among the most cash to spend to fill its remaining spots. They were conservative with their dollars and walked away with three projected starters. The Renegades finished highly in points per dollar spent and had a moderate grade in points per signing.
Best Value: Teddy Bridgewater, QB/CAR ($0.75 / 352.07 PPD)
Most Questionable: Kareem Hunt, RB/CLE ($8.00 / 26.30 PPD)

San Juan Scorpions — C+

The Scorpions had little to do during the auction but fill out their depth chart. With the NFT portion included, San Juan signed two projected starters. The Scorpions received low marks in points per signing and points per dollar spent, but they did well in points per projected starter.
Best Value: Zach Ertz, TE/PHI ($4.25 / 46.59 PPD)
Most Questionable: Robert Woods, WR/LAR ($10.00 / 22.28 PPD)

Christmas Island Crabs — C

The defending champions cleaned house this offseason and had the most spots to fill among all teams in the MFFL. They also had the second-most cash to do it with, but they walked away with one-third of their budget still in hand. The one area in which the Crabs excelled was points per dollar spent, receiving the highest grade of any team in the league. Outside that, they did poorly in points per signing, number of projected starters signed, points per starter and points per dollar spent on projected starters.
Best Value: Auden Tate, WR/CIN ($0.25 / 290.60 PPD)
Most Questionable: Ian Thomas, TE/CAR ($2.50 / 62.37 PPD)

Bangkok Blitz — C

The Blitz rode into draft day with the most cash to spend, and yet spent among the least of all teams in the league. They exited auction day with an astounding 54% of their budget remaining. Maybe they’ll front load the contracts of their stacked rookie class. Perhaps they’ll adjust the salaries of their other veterans. Whatever the strategy may be, they turned some heads nonetheless. With few established starters on this once rebuilding franchise, the Blitz were able to do well in at least one area of the auction. The Blitz graded well in points per dollar spent and points per dollar spent on projected starters.
Best Value: Chris Thompson, RB/JAX ($0.25 / 362.28 PPD)
Most Questionable: JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR/PIT ($13.00 / 20.37 PPD)
