Tuesday Evening Kicker: 2019 Week 1 Recap September 10, 2019 Break out the brooms! The Northwest Conference swept the Southeast in Week 1 of the 2019 MFFL season. RB Marlon Mack propelled the Scorpions to a huge victory. Super Bowl Champions leave no doubt, bring down Kamikazes San Juan Scorpions 208.57, Nagasaki Kamikazes 127.85 — In a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl in which the Scorpions squeaked out a 6-point victory, the defending champions left no doubt this time around. San Juan scored early and often, receiving 20-plus point efforts from five players, including 30.4 from RB Marlon Mack. The Kamikazes struggled to get their vaunted backfield in motion, as Aaron Jones and Joe Mixon failed to top double digits, ultimately proving to be one of the primary differences in the game. Next Week: San Juan travels to Wake Island for another battle with the East Division. Nagasaki attempts to get into the win column when they take on Jamaica, who put on an offensive exhibition in Week 1. RB Christian McCaffrey dominated in the Grainers’ victory over Turkey. Grainers ground Jerky into bits Ukraine Grainers 167.68, Turkey Jerky 101.02 — Clownin’ Around Antonio Brown left the Jerky in a dysfunctional situation against the Grainers. Ukraine pounded the Jerky by 66.66 points — I guess Antonio left his mark on the scoreboard after all. The Jerky started four running backs and not one of them topped double digits. For the Grainers, RB Christian McCaffrey led all scorers with 46.7 points. QB Deshaun Watson scored 32.73 points, helping Ukraine pull away in the fourth quarter. Next Week: Ukraine will do battle with Egypt, who put up 191 points in a loss in Week 1. Turkey will try to take down the Squirrels of Switzerland. WR Sammy Watkins blew up for 46.8 points in the Squirrels’ victory. Squirrels scamper past the Blitz Switzerland Squirrels 141.12, Bangkok Blitz 130.35 — Bangkok had no answer for Squirrels WR Sammy Watkins, who led all scorers with 46.8 points and helped the team top the Blitz in Week 1. Wide receiver Robert Woods put up 17 points, but no other Switzerland player topped 15. WR DeAndre Hopkins (31.1) and TE Delanie Walker (25) led the way for the Blitz. Bangkok got little help from their NFT player, Todd Gurley, who finished with just 13.9 points. Wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Mike Williams failed to top 6 points, ultimately proving to be a difference maker in this one. Next Week: Bangkok will try to get on track when they travel to Russia to take on the 1-0 Renegades. Switzerland will play host to the 0-1 Turkey Jerky. RB Austin Ekeler topped 40 points in Jamaica’s victory over Christmas Island. Jamaican me Crabby: Jerks bully Christmas Island Jamaica Jerks 186.07, Christmas Island Crabs 134.78 — Jamaica exploded out of the gates and sprinted out to an insurmountable lead en route to a big victory over Christmas Island. Running backs Austin Ekeler (41.8) and Dalvin Cook (30.2), and receivers Keenan Allen (26.3) and Julian Edelman (16.62) were instrumental in the win. Christmas Island received a balanced effort from their roster, but failed to generate much production from the tight end (3.6) and kicker (4) position. WR Michael Thomas (22.3) led a strong effort at a fourth-quarter comeback, but ultimately the Crabs fell short. Next Week: Jamaica will look to make it 2-0 when they host last year’s Super Bowl runner-up, Nagasaki. Christmas Island will try to tally its first victory when they take on the Ewoks of Ecuador. RB David Johnson helped earn his contract by leading the Ewoks to victory. Wok’ing over the Wookiees: Ecuador tops Wake Island Ecuador Ewoks 145.65, Wake Island Wookiees 108.43 — The MFFL’s highest-paid player, RB David Johnson, helped lead the Ewoks to a Week 1 victory over Wake Island. TE Mark Andrews, just acquired via trade, made a splash in his Ecuador debut with 27.8 points. After failing to report to training camp, the Ewoks received 15.9 points from RB Ezekiel Elliott. Wake Island got a solid day at the office from QB Drew Brees (25.33) and RB Saquon Barkley (20.1). Unfortunately for them, they didn’t receive much help from their teammates. Only Julio Jones (15.1) managed to top 15 points outside Brees and Barkley. Next Week: Ecuador will try to build a winning streak when they play host to Christmas Island. Wake Island will look for their first victory when they face the defending Super Bowl champion Scorpions. RB Josh Jacobs had a strong performance in his rookie debut. Fourth Quarter Russian drops Pharaohs Russia Renegades 198.08, Egypt Pharaohs 191.65 — The battle between two of the lowest projected scoring teams in the MFFL wound up being the highest scoring game of Week 1. Russia mounted a fourth-quarter comeback and scored the victory behind rookie RB Josh Jacobs, who was activated from the Rookie Corral the day before the game. Jacobs (28.9) was joined by RB Derrick Henry (32.7), TE Evan Engram (32.6) and QB Carson Wentz (27.73) as the top scorers. Egypt jumped out to an early lead in this one behind the continued dominance of QB Patrick Mahomes (28.25), as well as WR Desean Jackson (35.4) and RB Mark Ingram (25.5). Outside Jackson, the lower scoring from the Pharaohs’ receiving corps ultimately proved to be the difference. Next Week: Russia will attempt to stretch their win total to 2 when they face Bangkok. Egypt will try to pick up their first victory against Ukraine.
